The varied landscape ranges from rugged, snow-capped mountains in the winter of dense bushland to an idyllic farmland. In the “horizontal forest” the trees grow sideways, so that the logs parallel to the floor. Iceland is located south of Hobart, Bruny with beautiful beaches. The two halves of the island are connected by a narrow isthmus, breed on the sand dunes from August to April penguins.

Five demonstrators led by two staff from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre were protesting outside Sotheby’s at the proposed sale of "racist" 19th-century black plaster busts of Van Diemen’s Land Aboriginal chief Woureddy and his wife Truganini who to the offence of Aboriginal people is often referred to as the last "full-blood" Tasmanian Aboriginal. Sotheby’s had withdrawn the works for sale just hours before the auction after it learnt of the protest and growing attention in Tasmania where Greens leader Nick McKim had backed Aboriginal activist Michael Mansell’s call for the busts to be returned to the local indigenous community. The busts had been expected to sell for between $500000 and $700000 for the vendor – a family from NSW that has owned them by familial descent from the original artist Benjamin Law who is considered Australia’s first professional sculptor. "In consultation with the vendor Sotheby’s has decided to withdraw the lots from sale” the auction house said in a statement yesterday. ”This has been done to ensure the safety and security of the public and staff and protect the works. ” Protest organiser Sara Maynard the legal field officer for the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre said her group had decided to go ahead with the protest to bring attention to the issue and to "negotiate" with the vendor to return the busts to Tasmania’s Aboriginal community.

Tasmania’s Gay and Lesbian rights group says joint motherhood is now recognised in most states and territories and Tasmania should do the same. The Attorney-General Lara Giddings has told State Parliament the change would remove discrimination and protect children in same-sex relationships. “As the law stands the birth-mother is registered as the mother and the partner has no rights at law” said Ms Giddings. “This bill will rectify that situation and put a same-sex partner in the same position as a male partner who has agreed to their partner becoming pregnant through ART. ” The Liberals have been granted a conscience vote.

These fine facts and more I learn on the four-day Bay of Fires walk. We have stopped to investigate the rather unusual “marsupial lawns” behind the sand dunes of the Bay of Fires. These lawns are sometimes referred to as the Serengeti of Tasmania. Perhaps a bit of an exaggeration but they are home to the Big Five of the local marsupial world ? the Forester kangaroo the Bennetts wallaby the Tasmanian pademelon the common wombat and the Tasmanian devil. If a Tassie tiger ever raised its head I’m sure this is where it would pop up. ur walk begins at Stumpy Bay in Mt William National Park in the north-eastern corner of the state. ur group consisting of five women from three states plus two Tasmanian guides wastes no time in getting down to business.

Ms Goodwin says she is relieved after a 10-day wait for postal ballots. “A sense of relief and I guess starting to feel a sense of excitement as well. Four legal firms with which Sonya Causer had ”a large number of email exchanges” on her work email account have been named in legal documents along with 13 real estate agents through which she bought and leased properties in Melbourne Queensland and Tasmania. Mrs Causer and her husband Michael have had their assets frozen and have been ordered not to spend more than $1000 each on living expenses a week or more than $10000 on legal expenses as her former employer tries to recoup the money she siphoned off into personal banking accounts over two years. They have been ordered by the Supreme Court of Victoria to hand over all documents relating to the property and stolen money. Clive Peeters hopes to sell the properties to recover the losses. While fraud squad police are aware of the case charges have not yet been laid against Mrs Causer a senior financial accountant at Clive Peeters now suspended without pay or Mr Causer.
