But the trio believe they just may have the answer to saving the iconic Tasmanian devil from extinction. And their idea — 20 "devil islands" or double-security fenced enclosures ranging from 12 to 80 hectares and containing a combined 1500 devils — is beginning to become a reality. The prototype enclosure of 11ha is home to 11 devils breeding successfully while government funding is promised for a further three enclosures and private land parcels pledged for six. The idea is to isolate healthy devils from those with the deadly devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) in an area big enough to allow them to retain their wild skills for eventual release. It began with Bruce Englefield who spent much of the 1970s and 80s as technical and sound director on British TV’s Benny Hill Show.

State Liberal leaders have expressed their own concerns that the signs will breach local law. South Australia and Tasmania will both go to the polls on March 20 next year Victorians are due to vote on November 27 while the much anticipated NSW election will be held on March 26 2011 just days before the signs are due to come down. SA and NSW both have laws limiting the size of political advertising while Victoria has tight requirements about where political advertisements can be displayed. Tasmanian Liberal senator Richard Colbeck said he believed the signs breached Section 4 of the state Electoral Act which referred to comment on "the government or opposition or a previous government or opposition of the commonwealth or a state or territory". Tasmanian Liberal pposition Leader Will Hodgman also expressed his concern. Tasmanian electoral commissioner Bruce Taylor indicated he would seek advice from the state’s solicitor-general.

Cancer machine delays rejected

Partner charged over assault of MP Jodie Campbell

He was not required to enter a plea to the charge of common assault and was bailed to reappear on September 29. Australian scientists confirmed yesterday what they have suspected for years — that the waters around the southern island of Tasmania have once again been turned into a nursery for Southern Right whales which became scarce after excessive whaling in the early 1800s. Two weeks ago a mother and newborn calf were spotted in Great yster Bay near Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. Scientists examined the photographs and confirmed yesterday that the calf was no more than two days old which meant that it had been born in local waters. Earlier yesterday there was another report of a Southern Right whale giving birth at Cape Barren Island in the Bass Strait to the north of Tasmania; however this is yet to be confirmed by scientists. Marine biologist David Pemberton said the confirmation that the recently sighted calf was born in Tasmanian waters was critical to the ongoing recovery of the species of which there are approximately 1500 that migrate to Australia each year out of the estimated 60000 in the world.

These ruins are the remains of the Long Marsh Dam a project by local landowners to harness free convict labour and irrigate 540 acres of farmland from the Macquarie River. That current has expanded significantly curling around the southern tip of Tasmania and reaching as far north as St Helens. The primary barrier to entry into Tasmania was lack of competitive backhaul. Sam Rosen age 19 returned stateside late this spring after fishing a strip of ocean south of Australia known as the Tasmanian Roaring Forties. Fifteen-foot swells and typically foul weather characterize this region of the world and it was there that Rosen worked for two months hauling 75-pound traps full of the southern rock lobster on trips lasting anywhere from one to three weeks. Fishing for the Tasmanian rock lobster (which are clawless unlike the American lobster) was part of Rosen’s six-month stay on the island of Tasmania a small state about two-thirds the size of Maine off the southern coast of Australia. With Tasmania as his lens and after lobstering for nearly his entire life Rosen has developed a novel assessment of the Midcoast lobster industry. A Vinalhaven resident he graduated from Vinalhaven High School in 2008.

The Toxic Warrior group includes community members health professionals and scientists and aims to expose what they claim are holes in information given to the public about contaminated sites. Simon Branigan from Environment Tasmania says such information needs to be more easily available. “At this stage no we don’t believe there is easy access to information” Mr Branigan said. “So we’re going to create a central database so all Tasmanians and also people on the mainland can come down to Tasmania and see what are the pollution issues. ” Mr Branigan says the group will use academic research historical records and independent surveys to assess areas they consider toxic. “But we’re also going to hold the government to account to make sure they have a thorough monitoring and testing program.

Federal Minister for Housing Tanya Plibersek and Tasmanian Minister for Human Services Lin Thorp today outlined new initiatives to reduce homelessness and reach out to people struggling to keep a roof over their heads during the global recession. The National Partnership Agreement includes these initiatives: The Same House Different Landlord program which will move homeless people into 100 homes across Tasmania. Dedicated teams of support staff which will provide specialist tenancy services to assist people moving from homelessness to maintain long term housing tenancy.
