The Co-operative Research Centre for Forestry conducted the research after asking Tasmanian communities what they wanted to know about the impacts of plantation forestry. Dr Jacki Schirmer from the Forestry CRC and the Australian National University says while they found a decline in the populations they studied this wasn’t unique to areas where plantations have expanded. “That decline in population is no greater than what we see happening on rural areas where you don’t have many plantations” she says. “And unfortunately rural population decline tends to be happening in any areas where farming’s getting more efficient and farm amalgamation’s happening.

Three Tamar Valley landowners backed by Environment Tasmania asked the government to provide its reasons for granting a permit to build the northern Tasmanian mill. Justice Peter Evans dismissed the application saying section 11 of the government’s Pulp Mill Assessment Act prevents any legal application about the assessment process. Environment Tasmania’s Phil Pullinger says the decision denies democratic rights. “This is about getting proper accountability and transparency” he said. A Law Lecturer from the University of Tasmania Tom Baxter says the decision removes the rights of any citizen to obtain information about provisions placed on the mill.

Mr Allston said boxing competitions could be held in the state without control from police unless a complaint was made and police believed they should intervene. pposition sports spokesman Peter Gutwein questioned why police were determining who could hold bouts without the power to do so. “What concerns me is on what basis did police only allow Boxing Tasmania to hold tournaments and exclude the boxing leagues?” he said. Sports Minister Michelle 'Byrne said she understood police decided that neither Global or Tasmania Amateur Boxing was able to meet the national safety standards. “Club coaches and other officials were not subject to police history checks to assess their suitability to be involved with children” she said. Ms 'Byrne said she understood that Tasmania Police was reviewing its permit system after discussions with the State mbudsman. She said all applications would now be considered on a case by case basis and would not be subject to affiliation with Boxing Tasmania.
