The officers along with a woman who has required hospital care are the latest in Tasmania to return positive tests for the virus. Eight other ambulance officers from the same station as the two infected officers have been isolated for testing along with two ambulance patients. Authorities have refused to identify the station involved other than to say it’s in the state’s northwest. The station has been disinfected as the outbreak puts strain on other staff.

It was forecast approximately two years ago well before the arrival of the Global Financial Crisis that a review would be conducted now. “The review by Landcare Research New Zealand an organisation that has experience in eradication of pest species from islands off the coast of New Zealand and consults internationally on this subject began at the end of April.

Eight people in Tasmania have now been confirmed as having the virus after two more positive results. Public Health Physician Kelly Shaw said the new cases included a woman who had recently travelled to Victoria – the first confirmed case swine flu in the state’s north. An ambulance officer from Tasmania’s northwest is the other new case Dr Shaw said in a statement. “Both of the new cases are in home isolation and following the advice of public health officials” Dr Shaw said. North West Ambulance Superintendent Paul Templar said swine flu continued to put pressure on staffing in the region.

Bacon’s son makes political tilt

Scott Bacon 32 is seeking ALP preselection for the Lower House seat of Denison in southern Tasmania. Mr Bacon is an economist and ministerial adviser. His father died of lung cancer five years ago. Announcing his candidacy outside a Glenorchy shopping centre Mr Bacon said he will focus on job security and the increasing cost of living. “I am proud of my father’s achievements as Premier and want to build on the strong vision he had for Tasmania” Mr Bacon said.
