However they say a lack of funds is preventing their discovery from being fully utilised and wildlife experts are warning the devil’s decline is fundamentally changing the Tasmanian landscape.

Burnie in the north-west of the state of Tasmania has been hit by repeated rounds of job cuts. But despite the gloom one local industry is thriving by producing handmade paper out of a material no-one else wants – wombat poo. The novelty paper is a hit with tourists keen to buy a distinctly Australian souvenir from the area. The wombat a furry marsupial lives in the wild only in Australia. Its characteristic waddle and playful appearance makes it one of the country’s most endearing native creatures.

The company has now announced up to two flights a day to Hobart and Launceston will be cut next month. Jetstar spokesman Simon Westaway has told ABC Local Radio it is only temporary. “We actually see scope for further growth in Tasmania over the medium to longer term as the economy turns” he said. “We’re pretty upbeat. “The reality there’s some seasonality in the Tasmanian market just like Cairns in February is tough going. “Unfortunately May seems to be a bit of a troubling month. Sandwich meat could save Tassie tourism

The tourism idea of Devonport woman Carolynn Jamieson follows a recent commitment by Premier David Bartlett to establish Tasmania as a destination for culinary excellence. Ms Jamieson is campaigning to replace her mother Norma Jamieson at an election on May 2 for the upper-house seat of Mersey incorporating Devonport. "I’ve got a stack of tourism ideas but I can’t talk about some because once the idea is out there somebody else in Australia could do it before we are ready" she said. "But the devon and port one is one that you can’t do unless you live in Devonport.
