While not giving up on the prospect of a locally based club Bartlett has bowed to commercial reality and acknowledged the league’s priority is building its base in the more populous northern states. “We respect the right of the AFL to expand the competition in the way they are doing through the Gold Coast and western Sydney” Bartlett said after meeting AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou in Launceston. “We’ve talked today about opportunities in the next three or four years within the AFL. “We are comfortable with the way our bid is progressing and with the way that Andrew and his people are working with us on that.

Zubizarreta a former top ASP European Junior surfer and last year’s ASP WQS No. 63 showed he was back in excellent form in Tasmania’s wild and cold waters by securing valuable 1375 ratings’ points a result that saw him rise to No. 9 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings. Zubizarreta who was stopped by longtime WQS campaigner and best ever Japanese surfer Masatoshi hno (JPN) managed to get through several tricky heats including a clash of the titans against ASP Top 45 member Josh Kerr (Gold Coast AUS) and former elite surfer Cory Lopez (Florida USA) in Round 3. At 23-years-old the Spanish surfer seems to rise as one of Europe’s best hopes towards a possible ASP World Tour qualification in 2009 after he proved his talent and skills during a promising 2008 season where he peaked at No. 36 before hurting one of his ankles in late September last year an injury that forced him to pull out of all major events and miss the Hawaiian showdown.

The Governor of Tasmania His Excellency the Honourable Mr Peter Underwood has kindly agreed to fire the old cannon from HMS Edinborough to send the fleet for the 21st race on its way to Flinders Island.
