Tasmania’s Solicitor General Leigh Sealy has been giving evidence at a preliminary hearing in the case against suspended Police Commissioner Jack Johnston. Johnston 59 has pleaded not guilty to two counts of disclosing official secrets. He is accused of passing on confidential information to the State Government. Mr Sealy has told the Magistrates Court that the Secretary of a government department must provide full frank and honest advice to the Minister and to do otherwise would be contempt of parliament. The second day of the hearing has also taken evidence from a criminologist Vanessa Goodwin who says she saw a briefing note about a police investigation into a politician.
