The scat is being analysed to build a scientifically-based map of fox populations as part of an ongoing monitoring exercise. The work is being conducted by the University of Western Australia in conjunction with the Tasmanian Fox Eradication Project and is supported by the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre. The Wildlife Genetics Laboratory at the University of Canberra sent the DNA from 30 scats collected in Tasmania and identified as being of fox origin to Dr liver Berry for processing in a specialised wild-life forensic laboratory at the University of Western Australia. “f the 30 tested 5 scats produced a unique individual genotype indicating the presence of at least five different foxes in the sample” said Dr Berry. “The poor results from the tests on the remaining scats reflect the rapid degradation of DNA as it ages. Although they are definitely fox scats the data is inconclusive regarding the individual identities of the foxes” said Dr Berry.

Daily Telegraph
article-tools –> By Michael Manley March 13 2009 12:00am THE Apple Isle’s best galloper Conquering returns to the mainland tomorrow to contest the Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington after a history-making summer in Tasmania. Conquering etched his name into Tasmanian racing books by becoming the first horse to make a clean sweep of their five-race weight-for-age series. He won the first two races of the series against the locals easily – by 8½ lengths over 1400m and then 7½ lengths over 1600m both at Elwick. In the final three legs he faced challenges from Victorian gallopers and he looked certain to lose the third leg when he dropped back to 1200m when he was headed by Juggle The Books at Launceston but he responded in fighting style. He then had to fight hard to defeat another Victorian Scenic Silver by a nose over 1400m at Hobart before rounding out the series with an easy win over Uzigal. He won $223800 for the series which took his record to 19 wins from 53 starts and his total prizemoney to $698650.
