System fails to find fault lines
The Australian
When a man goes to work and does not return his family is entitled to answers. However for the Knight family the answers they received this week seem only to raise more questions. If as Tasmanian Coroner Rod Chandler found this week Beaconsfield Gold Mine failed to adequately assess the dangers facing Knight and other workers why will no one be held to account for these failings? If the work safety watchdog Workplace Standards Tasmania abrogated its responsibilities as badly as Chandler found why are heads not rolling? If mine safety legislation has been badly in need of reform for many years as Chandler suggested why has it still not occurred? Knight’s family including his widow Jacquie and brother Shane have laid Larry to rest but these unresolved questions deny them the degree of closure it had been hoped the coronial process would provide. "We wanted to achieve change for the whole mining industry so that other people didn’t have to go through what we have been through" Shane Knight says. "But the system is not prepared to stand up and penalise those companies and people when they do wrong. And for us that means the system is a waste of time. That’s what I honestly feel.
