Tasmania’s redesign of post Year-10 education is seen by some as an experiment on an entire generation; by others as brave and inspirational. Languishing at the bottom of the class in several key indicators of educational performance the island state is taking radical action aiming for the top grade within a decade. Accused of using students as guinea pigs Premier and Education Minister David Bartlett has staked his career on turning around decades of failure. Tasmania and the ACT are the only jurisdictions with a secondary college system in which students undertake Year 11 and 12 in dedicated post-Year 10 institutions. While the system has its supporters it appears to have failed in Tasmania.

Bid to save survivors of beached whale pod
Scotsman United Kingdom
Six rangers continued to pour water on the parched skin of the whales the only ones left alive from a pod of 45 that beached on Thursday on a sand bank off Australia’s southern coast. Liz Wren a spokeswoman for the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service said sandbars off the beach had hindered efforts to move the whales back to sea. She said rescuers’ plan to save the remaining whales at high tide today would be “one of the most challenging rescues ever attempted”. The reasons for the whales’ beaching ? off Perkins Island on the north-west of Tasmania ? were unclear but Ms Wren said they may have been partly caused by rough seas and the narrow channel the pod had been navigating between the island and the mainland.
