Tasmanian devils threatened by contagious cancer
The Associated Press
The Tasmanian devil a ferocious snarling fox-sized marsupial is in danger of going extinct because of a contagious facial cancer. In the meantime its biggest rival — the European fox — is thriving and may become so dominant that the devil never comes back. Scientists now want to build a double fence standing more than three feet tall to stop the cancer’s relentless spread toward the rugged northwest of the island home to disease-free devils and World Heritage-listed rain forest. Devils spread the cancer when they bite each other during mating or squabble over food.

Doubt over Australian bid for UN heritage listings
The Australian Australia
As revealed in The Australian yesterday the nomination of 11 convict sites was aggressively reworked under the Howard government to avoid any controversy over white settlement and the Aboriginal account of the nation’s convict past. A tentative list of sites submitted to the UN Educational Scientific and Cultural rganisation in 1999-2000 was eventually changed. ld Government House in Sydney and the Cascade Female Factory in Tasmania were replaced with Sydney’s New Government House and Tasmania’s Ross Female Factory; three previously unlisted sites Brickendon and Woolmers estates in Tasmania the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area on Norfolk Island and Cockatoo Island in Sydney were added; and the government backed away from its original theme of white settlement to instead promote the evolution of early punishment techniques which met a different set of UNESC criteria and was deemed less controversial. But under UNESC’s operating guidelines "nominations to the World Heritage List are not considered unless the nominated property has already been included on the State Party’s Tentative List". A strict interpretation of that rule would make five of the nominated sites invalid. The Australian has made several attempts to clarify the guidelines with UNESC only to be repeatedly referred back to the guidelines. Some members of the World Heritage Centre are on a retreat and unavailable for comment.

Sheridan eyes a start with Bushrangers

He said the fact he would have access to the Bushrangers’ medical staff played a big role in his decision to make the move. ”ne of the main reasons why I thought I’d head down there is because I can have that support with my injuries and access to physios and massage and things. ”Sheridan will still play for the Comets in their final Cricket Australia Cup game against Tasmania next month. ”They’ve cleared me to play for the ACT and that’s a great opportunity for me because of the exposure and the standard of cricket it is” he said.

Mystery deepens over missing yachtsman
ABC nline Australia
Police boarded the yacht at 7:30 am and pumped out water. Two police boats patrolled the river and four divers searched beneath the boat but failed to find any sign of him. Sergeant John Pratt says the man had no way of getting to shore because his dinghy was at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. He says police hold concerns for his welfare. “Whilst we hope it’s not the case we have to consider sinister circumstances but it’s also quite possible that he may have fallen off the vessel or also the fact that someone else has picked him up” he said. “All of those circumstances are being considered and looked at. “Anyone who can provide information about the sailing vessel ‘Four Winds’ or the movement of a small inflatable dinghy between the Royal Yacht club of Tasmania and the moored vessel if they could contact police it would be greatly appreciated.
