Hussey powered his way to 100 not out striking 12 fours and three sixes off 47 balls. n the way he became the first player to score 500 runs in this competition reaching the milestone during a Ben Hilfenhaus over in which he clubbed 19 runs. He later chimed in with 2-36 when Tasmania batted.

The yacht’s average speed yesterday evening suggested it wouldreach the finish at about 7. 30am but race officials said 9am wasmore likely. Conditions were expected to lead to slower going once Shortwaverounded Tasmania’s southern tip particularly as it would be duringthe night. Four yachts — Ninety Seven Alex-Team Macadie Tevake IIand Spirit of Downunder — were in a tight battle for the minorplacings. They were not expected to finish until this evening. Shortwave had been the first boat out of the heads taking outthe Port Phillip Bay Pilots trophy and overtaking Tevake II whichwon the start at Portsea. It was slower going for the boats in the east-coast version ofthe Melbourne-Hobart run concurrently with the west coast race forthe first time this year.

Wild ats XI which tore a spinnaker soon after the racestart and had to stop last night after it collided with a two-meter shark led Skandia to the finish line. Skandia finished in1 day 21 hours 41 minutes and 17 seconds. The time set by Wildats XI in this year?s race was about two hours behind therecord it set three years ago. The current edition marks the 10th anniversary of the 1998race when six sailors died as the worst storm in the event?shistory pounded the fleet.
