Up to 18 wild devils fitted with data-gathering collars aremissing believed dead at Narawntapu National Park in Tasmania’snorth the Herald has learnt. The losses follow signs that the equipment was troubling someanimals. Their necks became chafed and in two cases devils werefound with legs caught in the collars sources said. The animal ethics committee at the University of Tasmaniafinally withdrew approval for the research because it was concernedat the number of animals that could not be retrieved. “It’s not reasonable to put equipment on animals if there is apossibility of them carrying it for the rest of their lives” theuniversity’s animal welfare adviser Barrie Wells said.

The Minister for Environment Parks Heritage and the Arts Michelle ‘Byrne said the second round of the Arts Tasmania Aboriginal Arts Fund offers grants to eligible artists for residencies mentorships individuals and group projects. “Mentorship grants are allocated to assist Aboriginal artists to learn from experienced mentors anywhere in Tasmania. ” Ms ‘Byrne said project funding is available to assist individual artists collaborations and groups of artists such as actors arts administrators choreographers visual artists and writers.
