The council says there are only two driving instructors in Launceston and some teenagers are having to wait up to seven months for their provisional licence test. Edwina Dalco from the Launceston City Council Youth Advisory Group says it is a state-wide concern and the council is writing to the government in an effort to address the issue. “Although it is affecting our community it is affecting many more as well I know other communities like Longford is in a very similar situation as is Scottsdale a lot of the residents in Launceston and surrounding areas are in fact going to Devonport where they can get in sooner” she said. Ms Dalco says the long waiting list is making it hard for some students.

In Nicholas’ office in Collingwood there is an old wooden ice chest from that era. “Mum and Dad bought it at auction in the 1950s. It’s a very rare piece made in Tasmania from cedar from Botany Bay. The reason it is important is that the most significant examples of early Australian furniture that have inspired me have come from Tasmania and you know why? Because cabinetmakers were the guys most likely to end up on a convict ship. They were notoriously underpaid but when they came out here and got their ticket of leave they got some of the highest wages in the land because everybody needed furniture. But now Dattner is bidding furniture farewell and looking for a new challenge. He has his eye on a boat for sale in Bundaberg which he wants to sail around the world.

“We’re looking at beds and the number available for people within the hospital system we’re looking at the waiting time for treatment and admission. “We’re also looking at the number of people employed in the system and we are looking at those employed in administrative roles compared to those working at the coal face. The Australian Medical Association’s Haydn Walters says Tasmania has more administrative staff working in hospitals than other states. “We do seem to have a large bureaucracy” Professor Walters said. Mr Dean says the large amount of bureaucrats within the health system is a common complaint.
