article-tools –> June 03 2008 12:00am N MAY 21 the Tasmanian devil; the world’s largest carnivorous marsupial was officially listed as an endangered species by the Tasmanian Government. Devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) a deadly and disfiguring facial cancer that can kill within six months has cut Tasmania’s wild devil population by as much as 60 per cent. Experts believe the Tasmanian devil could become extinct in three years as a result of DFTD. To help ensure survival of the species at least 73 Tasmanian devils have been sent to mainland wildlife parks and zoos far away from the threat of the disease to breed and form a captive insurance population. Known as Project Ark this captive population may one day be used to repopulate the wild. Healesville Sanctuary which is run by Zoos Victoria is one of four mainland zoos caring for and breeding 12 animals from the first batch of 47 devils sent across Bass Strait. The breeding project recently received a $10000 donation from Suzuki Australia which also donated two Suzuki Grand Vitara SUVs to Zoos Victoria for use at Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee pen Range Zoo.

It would not have been the first time Clarkson or a Hawks staff member had assured the Tasmanian media a player was fine to go only to be a non-starter. Last season before the Kangaroos defeated the Hawks in Launceston Lance Franklin failed to participate in the previous night’s light run. An inquiry to the club received a response that it was a non-compulsory session and Franklin had chosen not to attend the only player to do so. Turns out he wasn’t even in the state because of a virus. And this was just one example of Hawthorn’s attitude to the press.
