The service’s Chris Colley says the hazards were discovered in the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area. They’ve now been removed and warning signs erected but Mr Colley says the wires are extremely dangerous and has urged anyone seeing people erecting such hazards to contact police. Parks and Wildlife has also urged users of the site to take extreme care and says riders should not ride in the area especially at night. Roxon wants Mersey Hospital back in Tas Govt hands
abc.net.au – Jun 6, 2008
Felicity Ogilvie reports from Hobart. FELICITY OGILVIE: It’s been ten months since the former prime minister John Howard used You Tube to announce the Federal takeover of the Mersey Hospital. JOHN HOWARD: The Tasmanian Government has announced plans to downgrade the existing hospital which has left the local community deeply unhappy. The Commonwealth’s true role in this case is one of direct intervention to help the local community. The Mersey Hospital is in a marginal northern Tasmanian seat that the Liberals lost at the last federal election. The Labor Government promised to go ahead with the Commonwealth’s takeover. The Commonwealth’s true role in this case is one of direct intervention to help the local community. The Mersey Hospital is in a marginal northern Tasmanian seat that the Liberals lost at the last federal election. The Labor Government promised to go ahead with the Commonwealth’s takeover. The Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon was hoping to find a private provider to run the hospital. NICOLA ROXON: Unfortunately I’m here to announce that I’m disappointed that that process has not produced a suitable provider to run services for the Commonwealth at the Mersey Hospital and am announcing that accordingly we have commenced negotiations with the Tasmanian Government to ask them to run the hospital on the Commonwealth’s behalf. FELICITY OGILVIE: The Tasmanian Health Minister Lara Giddings has been vehemently opposed to the federal takeover of the Mersey Hospital.

Population grows at record rate
The Age – Jun 6, 2008
At this rate Victoria would grow to 6 million people by 2016 with most of that growth in Melbourne. But well before that Tasmania will reach a milestone that surprises experts. With its population reaching 495772 at the end of 2007 and more people now moving in from interstate than leaving Tassie is on track to reach 500000 residents by the end of this year. The rapid population growth is driven by business recruiting ready-trained skilled workers from poorer countries rather than training Australians. In the six months to April almost 100000 temporary workers arrived while the Government has just increased the quota for permanent skilled migration from 102500 to 133500. Critics point out that there has been no increase in housing supply so the arrivals are intensifying the housing shortage and helping to drive up rents.

Umpires take stand against abuse team suspended
The Australian – Jun 6, 2008
The Oatlands District Football Association which runs a five-team country league has suspended the Ross Football Club for the second half of this season. AFL Tasmania regional manager Wayne Povey said today the Ross club has until June 18 to appeal its exclusion for player discipline issues. ODFA president Helen Scott said the decision this week to exclude Ross was made after umpires refused to officiate at any more Ross games. "The umpires’ association wrote to me and said it will not be sending umpires for Ross games unless something is done about the abuse" Ms Scott said. "We thought we had a solution when Ross said it would de-register any player who was sent off or reported for abusing an umpire. "But they didn’t get a chance to prove that because the umpires were not satisfied with that step.

Scott Watters coaching WAFL state side for first time
NEWS.com.au – Jun 6, 2008
"It’s always good for the code to come out to the country to play these types of games. There’s a lot of interest in AFL football in Townsville and we are looking forward to putting on a good show. " Queensland has beaten the ACT and Tasmania in State matches since losing to WA by 58 points at Gold Coast Stadium in 2005 and captain David Lillico is desperate to make sure the visitors return to Perth full of respect for Queensland football. "It’s a great honour to be captain and we’ve been successful the last couple of years against ACT and Tasmania. This is a step up for us and WA will be a real good challenge that I’m looking forward to" Lillico said. "We are looking for respect. They probably don’t respect us as much as the players in our league deserve and we are looking to do well against them.
