"So the timing for me is good that after 30 years of representing the interests of other people I’m making a decision for myself and my family. Mr Lennon also paid tribute to his predecessor and mate Jim Bacon who died of lung cancer a month after standing aside in 2004. "I leave public life in Tasmania very satisfied that I’ve given it my best shot that Labor in government whilst I’ve been deputy premier and then premier has achieved much for Tasmania" he said. "We’ve not squandered the opportunities presented to us that stable majority government brings. "In 1998 when Jim Bacon and I came to government as premier and deputy premier we came to government when Tasmania was considered a basket double digit unemployment and shrinking economy and a shrinking population. "When Jim sadly passed away – and I dearly miss him – in 2004 I made two promises to him and the people of Tasmania. "Firstly that I would finish the job that we started together to make the Tasmanian economy strong and that’s a tick.

module-content –>. related-links –> The Hawks play four games in Tasmania each year traditionally against smaller-drawing interstate teams. Adelaide Port Adelaide Western Bulldogs and the Brisbane Lions are on the Tassie menu this season. "I don’t mind giving up numbers once twice three times a year if it actually helps build the recognition of what Tasmania is doing for the AFL" Kennett said. "ur members understand that we’ve got a total package in place now and that involves four games in Tassie and the ground there is perhaps the best surface in the country. "I’m not saying you do it every one of the four games but why should a group of people who love their sport be denied access to the variety of teams that we have? "Just because our head body wants to make sure that we have record attendances as opposed to what I think is much more important which is the whole culture of the game… story-tools –> Disclaimer Have Your Say Latest Comments: Demetrio and his misguided ignorance of Tasmania as an AFL family member is a disgrace. Tasmanian Premier to step down
abc.net.au – May 26, 2008
Has this caught people by surprise?FELICITY GILVIE: It’s caught Tasmanians by surprise but it hasn’t caught the Labor Party in Tasmania by surprise. There’s been a move here for weeks months that the Labor Party simply cannot win the next state election with Paul Lennon as premier. TNY EASTLEY: And Felicity what was the tipping point then that has caused this resignation today?FELICITY GILVIE: There was an opinion poll in Tasmania last week and that came to show that only 17 per cent of Tasmanians supported Paul Lennon as premier. nly 17 per cent of the population actually approved of him. The pposition leader had almost twice as many Tasmanians that would have rather had him as the premier. TNY EASTLEY: There was quite a turnaround after the Premier Lennon won the last election. Who’s expected to takeover then from Mr Lennon?FELICITY GILVIE: The Deputy Premier David Bartlett he’s a man who’s been deputy premier for six weeks… He’s been deputy premier for the past six weeks after the past one resigned in yet another political scandal here in Tasmania when he lied to Parliament. And David Bartlett is the Education Minister he’s not part of any faction and he’s only been a politician for four years. TNY EASTLEY: Why do you think Lennon is so unpopular in Tasmania?FELICITY GILVIE: Basically there’s a feeling amongst the people of Tasmania that Paul Lennon runs Tasmania Paul Lennon’s way not for Tasmanians. TNY EASTLEY: And that was revealed in that poll that came out in the paper. So Paul Lennon made the decision last night did he?FELICITY GILVIE: He did. He made it in his office down in Hobart. He called in two of his close friends and parliamentary colleagues the Treasurer and also another man the Speaker of the House Michael Polley.
Paul Lennon quits for family reasons
abc.net.au – May 26, 2008
But when he addressed the media he said that this was a personal decision and this is a bit of what he had to say. PAUL LENNN: After 30 year of representing the interests of other people I’m making a decision for myself and for my family. And I leave Tasmania I leave public life in Tasmania very satisfied that I’ve given it my best shot that Labor in government whilst I’ve been deputy premier and then premier has achieved much for Tasmania. We’ve not squandered the opportunities presented to us that stable majority government brings. ELEANR HALL: And that’s Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon announcing his resignation this morning. Felicity did he have anything to say about the controversy surrounding the Gunns’ pulp mill. FELICITY GILVIE: Yes when asked if the pulp mill had cost him his premiership his answer was a very succinct “no” and then he went on to say that he thought the pulp mill would be good for Tasmania but it was also interesting that he didn’t say that it was a sure thing that the pulp mill would be built… You know I’m going to have a holiday I haven’t had a holiday for nearly 20 years. I mean I’ve said my colleagues upstairs I said I’ll just say one thing “I’ll bet somebody asked me if I’m going to go on the board at Gunns when I come down to the conference today” because you people out there you know you’re fixated with it you’re obsessed by it. And what my obsession is getting the unemployment rate in Tasmania down giving us a strong economy and value adding our natural resources here in our state whether they be our timber resources or our mineral resources. ELEANR HALL: That’s Paul Lennon. What was his mood Felicity at this press conference?FELICITY GILVIE: It was quite emotional. Paul Lennon is a very emotional man and often he goes red in the press conferences and tends to take questions quite personally as if the journalists are somehow attacking him rather than asking questions about his government. And today was no different and there was a few moments especially his wife and daughter and grandson were there and when he announced that for the past 30 years he’s been married and he’s also been in public life as either a union official or in politics and he said “Tomorrow will be there 30th wedding anniversary” and he said it will just be a relief to spend that with his wife alone.
The painful lengths to which some will go to fulfil their dream of…

Caused by a lack of genetic variation the Tassie Devil becomes another endangered Australian marsupial along with the Black Footed Rock Wallaby the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat and Gilbert’s Potoroo. A breeding program designed to help save the Tasmanian Devil from extinction has seen 47 devils sent to four zoos on the mainland of Australia. Twenty-four others have been collected from the wild and held in quarantine in Hobart in Tasmania with hopes of raising that number to 100 by year’s end. ne man who worries about the problems associated with captive bred animals where they no longer have the ability to survive in the wild is Bruce Englefield. Near Bicheno on the island’s east coast Bruce and his wife Maureen own and operate a wildlife park. They have donated the use of 11 hectares–28 acres of land to establish an island of protection so a wild population of disease-free breeding devils may live safe from the disease. Work is complete on a double security fence system to enclose the first devil island.
