Targa Tasmania diary day 8: in transit
Telegraph.co.uk – Apr 23, 2008
Adam and Jarrod of the Vodafone-sponsored Redback RenaultSport Spider team whose service crew we shared for refuelling were particularly delighted to find that they had secured a Targa Trophy after all having previously miscalculated the time they lost in a spin on the penultimate stage; being in a class of one their class-winning prize seemed much less of an achievement. We didn’t earn a Targa Trophy of course even though our times were comfortably quick enough because we had missed several stages due to our diff problems but we did attend to watch the infamous “party tape” video that records some of the rally’s hairier moments (and on this occasion those of previous years). The rest of the afternoon passed in a curiously indecisive blur of bag-packing before a post-event interview with Tasmania’s ABC radio and the more formal celebration dinner and major prize-giving which was a surprisingly jolly affair considering how tired everybody was. We were sensible (knackered) enough to forego any late night alcohol and retire early.

childish and not completely mentally developed Posted by: John of a soapbox 3:30pm April 23 2008 Comment 15 of 19. story-content–> i see mr objective where are you from m8. i think if u come to tasmania u would see how proud a sporting state we are. just yesterday i see 8 of australias rowing squad for beijing are tasmanian. besides being a great sporting state we have never had a team which could provide wide exposure for corporate companies as the afl can and i think u will find if there was an afl team in tassie we would have sponsors lining up. and what say about economic capacity and social structure u are talking rubbish… besides being a great sporting state we have never had a team which could provide wide exposure for corporate companies as the afl can and i think u will find if there was an afl team in tassie we would have sponsors lining up. and what say about economic capacity and social structure u are talking rubbish. Tasmania was the quickest growing economy in australia last year and socially we have the right mix to get 30000 members. just look at how hawthorns membership has multiplied since being in tasmania we love afl. unlike other states where they compete against other codes we do not have this dilemma.
Hawke to be VIP as dam victory celebrated

"It not only split the state but it split families and part of this celebration is a recognition of the great healing and the new direction that Tasmania has taken" he said. He plans to invite the people from the "other side" of the campaign including former Tasmanian premier Robin Gray who swept into office in 1982 with the support of traditional Labor voters on the back of his promise to build the Gordon-below-Franklin dam. The campaign split the Tasmanian community and saw violence on the West Coast and huge protest marches across the country including 10000 at a Melbourne rally. In one of the biggest environment rallies in history 22000 people marched behind the "No Dams" banner in Hobart. There were "spy flights" a thundering No Dams protest vote at a referendum and hundreds of people from grannies to businessmen were arrested. The Great Dam Debate was an issue which had dogged the Tasmanian community for four turbulent years. There were "spy flights" a thundering No Dams protest vote at a referendum and hundreds of people from grannies to businessmen were arrested. The Great Dam Debate was an issue which had dogged the Tasmanian community for four turbulent years. In 1983 Mr Hawke the ALP’s new national leader won the federal election on the back of his promise to stop the dam. n July 1 1983 the High Court of Australia ruled that the Hawke Federal Government had power to stop the Gray State Government from destroying the World Heritage values of the Franklin and Gordon rivers by building a 100m-high rockfill dam across the lower Gordon gorge. Former Tasmanian premier Doug Lowe who in 1980 convinced his Cabinet not to approve the dam and renowned botanist David Bellamy who spent his 50th birthday behind bars due to his protest against the dam have also agreed to attend the anniversary. The event will be held at Hobart’s Grand Chancellor Ballroom.
Rally organiser denies Green front

The meeting was organised in response to allegations the Premier directed the former Attorney General Steve Kons over the appointment of a magistrate. The Premier Paul Lennon has denied any wrongdoing and has also dismissed yesterday’s rally – saying the group is a front for the Greens. “What the public of Tasmania want their politicians doing is working on plans and strategies that will make their lives better” he said. But the co-ordinator of the group Tasmanians for a Healthy Democracy Marion Nicklason says neither she nor the group have any political affiliation. “It’s unfortunate that he’s making these remarks when they’re unfounded” she said. A similar meeting is planned for Launceston next week. Ms Nicklason says the group is planning a meeting in Launceston next week to add pressure for an anti-corruption watchdog in Tasmania.
