Three’s a crowd

I doubt that the three divisions in the state could the hatchet and unite as one. I can use cricket as an example. Think about where all the major cricket is played when Tasmania is involved: Bellerive val in Hobart and don’t the northerners just love that. The VFL team is now centred in Hobart. That is also causing rumblings. The state would have to be totally united if the request for a spot was to be treated seriously. As sad as it is to say I just cannot imagine that will ever happen.

Australian government urged to ban cluster bombs

A group of Tasmanian war veterans and their supporters are leading the push. The national organisation Mines Victims and Clearance Trust or MiVAC was formed in Tasmania in 2001. A founding member Rob Woolley says the group not only raises money for mine clearing projects in South East Asia but it also looks after communities by going into a village and help reconstruct the village so that its people can get on with their lives. MiVAC organised a protest against the use of cluster bombs outside Parliament House in Hobart yesterday. Lisa Singh from the United Nations Association says most bomb victims are children.

With the Bullants up by just two points at three-quarter time it wasn’t until late in the last quarter that the home side held their own to come away with a win. David Teague and David Ellard kicked three goals with Carlton rookie Ellard best for the Bullants.

Concern about teacher numbers

The Government has put 35 inner-city schools around the state on notice for closure or amalgamation over the next decade. The Liberals’ Sue Napier says it’s estimated that up to 750 teachers could lose their jobs. She says teachers have a right to know what the closures will mean. “Student teachers who are studying at university need to know what is the potential employment opportunities in Tasmania into the future” she said.

Scholarship to help businesses clean up their act

University of Tasmanian science graduate Kathryn McLeod has been given $7500 as part of the government’s CleanBiz project. The 21-year-old will put the money towards an honours project to help businesses assess factors such as their water and energy use. More than 70 businesses are currently registered with the CleanBiz program.
