Brendon Gale discusses cutting number of AFL rounds

But I think it’s a discussion and a debate we probably have to have. GIDEN HAIGH JURNALIST: Brendan the AFL’s flagged that on the basis of its demographic calculations that the growth corridors of game are the Gold Coast and western Sydney thereby basically excluding Tasmania from the next stage of the AFL’s expansion. And I’m very proud of the accomplishments and achievements of Tasmanian football. Tasmania should have a place in the AFL competition if the AFL is to truly have a national footprint but I think it’s more important right now that that imprint or footprint go to the big growth corridors such as the Gold Coast and western Sydney. So in that respect we acknowledge the reasoning behind the AFL strategy and we fully support it. Having said that the door should not be shut to Tasmania and indeed Tasmania I guess needs to sort of understand what boxes it needs to tick over the next few years with a view to perhaps making a case in the medium- to long-term and from my point of view the quality of football in Tassie has diminished.

The burns that are the cause of the nicotine stained skies around the entire state are not fuel reduction burns. They are part of Forestry Tasmania’s harvesting activities” he said. A Forestry Tasmania spokesman says the burns are designed to mimic the natural role of fire in the life cycle of eucalyptus forests. He says the fires create ash which supports the germination and growth of new trees. The spokesman says a study found carbon stored in Tasmania’s state forests and resulting wood products will increase by more than 700000 tonnes a year over the next 40 years.
