Double demerit points to be considered

The three Easter fatalities have spurred the council to take action to try and work out why people are not following road rules. The chairman Graeme Sturges says the council is working with Monash University to come up with ways to get the message through to motorists that speeding kills. “The last two Easters in Tasmania have been fatality free where as in other states where they’ve had double demerit points they haven’t been as fortunate as Tasmania” he said. “This long weekend this Easter long weekend hasn’t been a good period of time on Tasmanian roads so we will need to sit back and we’ll need to evaluate whether or not the initiatives we’ve got in place are appropriate. Mr Sturgess says the council wouldn’t rule out advising the government to implement double demerit points to try and get through to drivers. “Look that’s certainly an issue that’s been raised today on radio talk back it’s not something that the government will take off the table but again I stress that we’ll be looking at complimenting the current road safety initiative based on evidence and not on emotion but it’s not a matter that we’ll take off the table.
