Michael Tate is a former Tasmanian Labor senator and justice minister as well as a former ambassador to the Vatican. He is now a Catholic priest in Tasmania. Reverend Professor Tate believes the power to appoint the Governor-General should be given to the Speaker and President of the Federal Parliament. “I believe we should move to a republican system but I think it won’t happen until the Queen either abdicates or dies” he said. “But we need to be ready and as an interim measure the Prime Minister should give up his power to appoint the Governor-General and hand it over to the Speaker and the President.

RBIN ADAIR: Very few organisms in Australia attack this plant therefore it’s been relieved of its herbivory pressure so it can produce more leaves more stems more fruit than in would normally do in its country of origin. n top of that the fact that the plants are very spiny and introduced stock such as sheep cattle horses will reluctantly graze this so the plant basically has free reign in this country. TIM LEE: The blackberry now infests nationally an estimated nine million hectares that’s equivalent to the size of Tasmania. PHIL RWE RGANIC BERRY GRWER: The plants are really only limited by water availability and it’s really rainfall levels across the continent of Australia that define where blackberries spread. TIM LEE: Recent studies have revealed that at least 23 species of blackberry from Europe America and Asia have established in Australia. Some of those varieties are recently evolved hybrids so identifying which strains of rust could counter them could have posed a scientific headache. The scientists devised a rather ingenious solution they took Australian blackberry plants like this and planted them outside the CSIR laboratory at Montpellier in France.

Again the film was mostly forgettable but it was another strong vehicle for Taylor to further her stateside career. Women’s magazines began to take notice shooting the glamorous youngster for several spreads – under taglines such as “Australia’s next big thing” and “The 10 fresh faces of Hollywood”. It may be a long way from the small-town sensibilities of Launceston Tasmania where she grew up but it’s apparent Taylor is making a name for herself in Tinseltown. That said during a recent interview Taylor professed her continued love for the Apple Isle where her parents remain and to where she escapes when not filming. "You know I go off and then I come home to the house I was born in and we sort of talk about the dog” she said. "(My parents) genuinely really like their life in Tassie. They have this simple thing going on.
