The Age – Mar 21, 2008
They glance at me pityingly – plodding along at ameandering pace – and leave me caught in their wake. Apart fromthem the road is empty until we hit the outskirts of the village. Believing the rumours about Tasmanian weather I’ve packed longtrousers fleece and long-sleeved shirts; I’ve stripped down to asinglet after 10 minutes on the bike. It turns out that the sungods live on this coast. Accommodation for the four days of the tour is in family roomsin backpacker hostels though there is an option for more upmarketsleeping arrangements. When we arrive at the St Helens Backpackers- a cute building with a comfortable family room – we change out ofour sweaty clothes and head off to the nearby pizza place fordinner. Trimboli’s turns out to be something of a local hot spotand there’s quite a crowd… With two daysleft in Hobart we’re completely hooked. We hire tandems and pedalmerrily all over the city: we’ve decided it’s the only way totravel. Kathryn Heyman travelled courtesy of Tourism Tasmania andIsland Cycle Tours. FAST FACTSIsland Cycle Tours runs custom family tours from $3500 for afamily of four for four days which covers private transportguide bike and helmet hire three nights’ accommodationbreakfasts and lunches national parks fees and entry to a wildlifepark. Mr Aird says it’s also pleasing to note that long term unemployment has fallen in all regions of the state. “When we came into government there were about 8500 long term unemployed and there’s now 2800 long term unemployed” Mr Aird said. “Its a very strong indicator that the benefits of the economic recovery of Tasmania is being shared amongst those who previously would not have had an opportunity” he said. Rachael Taylor enjoyed remaking the horror of Shutter
Providence Journal – Mar 21, 2008
She has to figure out what is real and what is not. ”Taylor’s work in Japan was just part of a trek she has been on for the past year. Her journey started with a move to Los Angeles from her small hometown of Launceston Tasmania. She almost immediately began work on the big-budget Transformers. Then she was whisked to Tokyo for Shutter. All of which has been good for her she says. With the travel and different cultures she believes she has changed grown and become a stronger person.
