The State Government says Tasmania is now close to a full complement of dentists for the first time in years. This time last year Tasmania’s dental waiting list was over 9000 people and 800 were on the long-term list in the north-west. Dr Lourens Depreez and Dr Isaac DiThebes started working in Devonport this week and a married couple will start in Burnie next month. The Health Minister Lara Giddings says that will give Tasmania 20 public dentists – just below the target number – and shows the State’s $22 million “Better Dental Care” package is working.

We now know it’s around two per cent. Now the reality is there is not a screaming majority for this. In Tasmania where we have relationships registers you have 0. 02 per cent of the population of Tasmania taking advantage of that. That now we are not in a position and we shouldn’t be in a position of democracy where we over turn compromise a fundamental institution in society for that small a percentage of the population. TNY JNES: Really this is a battle about words isn’t because in the end same sex couples in Australia Jim Wallace are going to be given the same legal rights as married couples are they not? So in the end you’re only quibbling about the actual word ‘marriage’?JIM WALLACE: I am quibbling about retaining and protecting the concept of marriage. The concept of marriage is about stability it brings stability into relationship which is essential for children.
