But what makes it more extraordinary is that to fully realise his dream Dean needed to collect the seed himself. He’s collected the seed in the field from wild populations. This has meant treks from the southern tip of Tasmania up to the Top End from the east to the west coast and from the deserts right up to the Snowy Mountains. “I bring back the seed grow eight seedlings and four of them are planted out here. The four trees that are grown here give a representation of how that species will grow in terms of its size growth rate and survival rate. “The other four seedlings are pulled up out of the pots and dried and pressed as seedling specimens. The seedling leaves of eucalypts are often quite different from the adult leaves and they’re really useful in identifying the species in many cases” he says.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard who handles the Industrial Relations portfolio stressed the proposal – based on an inquiry carried out for the NSW Government by Professor George Williams – was just one of a range of possible models being examined. Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said the proposed system recognised the rapid growth of small business across Australia. "If you are a bigger business operating in Queensland South Australia and Tasmania you are probably operating in more than one state" he said. "As I talk to small businesses across Australia they say one of their problems is disparate regulatory environments and state jurisdictions that make it hard for businesses to earn a quid. "Queensland’s Employment and Industrial Relations Minister John Mickel said the plan represented a fair and balanced approach to industrial relations. "The plan represents for the first time a real chance at developing a unified system that benefits employers and employees because it is fair balanced and involves all the states and territories as well as the Commonwealth" Mr Mickel said. "Such a system would have enough flexibility to allow the states to retain chosen areas and matters and participate in the shape and future of the system so that it benefits everyone involved.
