Members of the Health and Community Services Union and the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) have voted to introduce work bans in a pay dispute with Southern Cross Care. The unions are seeking a 5 per cent pay rise – Southern Cross Care has offered 3 per cent per year. However the state secretary of the ANF Neroli Ellis says they are happy to resume negotiations with Southern Cross at any time. “The nurses are very frustrated that they’re being offered an enterprise agreement offer that would leave them $5000 less than any other nurse in Tasmania” she said. “They also will be having conditions less than their counterparts who work within Southern Cross so the support staff are going to get better conditions than the nurses.

Tasmania searching for new solicitor-general

Bill Bale announced his retirement last July – although he acted in the position for several more months. Frank Neasey has been acting in the position since then but finished on Friday. The Attorney-General Steve Kons says the process of finding a replacement has begun. “We’re currently in the process of having a look at a short list of candidates through the departmental secretary. But Mr Kons says there are no problems through not having a solicitor-general for a short time.
