fficials told CDNN the 38-year-old diver as yet unidentified was diving with hookah equipment off the northwest side of the Tasman Peninsula. According to unconfirmed reports the victim may have become entangled in kelp. Diver who use hookah equipment breath air through a long hose from a compressor located on the surface often in a boat. The 38 year old was diving near Slopen Island near Nubeena when it appears he got caught in kelp. Police received the initial call from Coastal Radio at shortly after midday saying that the man had stopped breathing. Peter Morgan from the Ambulance Service says the man was declared dead at the scene. “A paramedic was dispatched with sea rescue from Dodges Ferry to the site of this incident where they found a middle aged male” he said. “They’ve attempted to resuscitate that patient unsuccessfully and the incident is now in the hands of the police.
eXtasea crosses for race double

eXtasea led for much of the race but was constantly threatenedby a series of yachts including its sister ship Dekadence. Speaking from the Hobart docks last night the elated skipper ofeXtasea Paul Buchholz said that nothing was certain until theyacht crossed the line. “We were never comfortable doing anything … we got aheadwith about an hour-and-a-half lead and we then parked on the northtip of Tasmania for about nine hours” he said. “The next morning we woke up and realised that all the boats wehad passed had gone past us with a wind shift and so the chase wason. We got past them and then the wind died down so we had to watchthem pass us again. After four days of racing much of the fleet could not beseparated as it moved across the north-east of Tasmania down theeast coast and into the mouth of the Derwent River. nly about one nautical mile separated the leaders as they cameup the Derwent River which is notorious for its ability to slowboats on the verge of victory.
