This year’s race is expected to be one of the most competitivein years with 82 boats leaving Portsea today and 55 continuing onto Hobart. Last year there were 19 boats in the Hobart fleet. Tasmanian Sally Rattle who skippered her yacht Archie to secondplace on IRC handicap results last year has returned for hersecond Hobart race and a chance at line honours. This year’s fleetalso includes several ocean racing rookies including a crew ofeight plumbers from Tasmania on board Singapore Girl.

It was the first road death in Tasmania during the holiday period. The man aged in his 40s was travelling on the Wesley Vale road towards Devonport about 6am. His blue hatchback appears to have veered off the road and ploughed into a gum tree about two metres from the side of the road. APT’s support for baby Delilah and the Tasmanian Devil Breeding Program in partnership with East Coast Natureworld comes through the APT Conservation and Charitable Foundation established in 2003 to support the protection of endangered species around Australia. APT’s sponsorship is supporting the devil’s feeding keeping health and breeding program to ensure the species’ population is encouraged in a protected environment. Park owner Bruce Englefield reported to APT that Delilah was “going well” and had become a crowd pleaser at the park. “Next February-April we shall be mating her and although we don’t have a male named Samson we do have some handsome boys available” said Mr Englefield. “Young females prefer the older males and will select the one they think will make the best mate.

The Treasurer Michael Aird is proposing a user-pays levy to raise $30m for Tasmania’s struggling Ambulance Service. While there is wide support in the Upper House for an across-the-board fee a user-pays system is unpopular. The Independent MLC for Windermere Ivan Dean is one of at least seven Independents unhappy with the proposal. “Unless a lot of things have changed in the last few weeks I don’t think there’ll be a lot of support at all” said Mr Dean. It’s the second budget measure to face opposition in the Legislative Council.

81 boats in Rudder Cup fleet start

Closer to the heads the breeze filled in to 10 knots at the mark Dekadence rounded some 200 metres ahead of Gusto. The next three boats rounded nose to tail the Tasmanian entry Creative In Tension marginally ahead of Peregrine and Royal Melbourne based Jazz Player. Paul Buchholz in his DK 46 eXtasea was working hard to regain ground on his rival Dekadence. The Port Phillip Pilots award for first through the heads now has Dekadence?s name ready to be engraved. The swell at the heads was moderate and breezes in Bass Strait this afternoon have been reported from the fleet as 13 knots south south easterlies. All the fleet will be hoping to make gains before the predicted softening this evening.
