Lyons – Federal Election 2007 – ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporati…
abc.net.au – Dec 29, 2007
The last MP to suffer defeat in this seat was Labor’s Gil Duthie. First elected in 1946 he served in the House of Representatives until defeated at the 1975 election that followed the dismissal of the Whitlam government. That election saw the Liberal Party win all five Tasmanian seats and the subsequent Franklin Dam dispute saw the Liberal Party retain its grip on Tasmania into the 1990s. Quirky local Liberal Max Burr won Wilmot in 1975 and retained the seat through its change of name until his retirement at the 1993 election. Labor’s Dick Adams then won the seat and has held it with relative comfort since though Labor’s unpopular forests policy produced a swing of 4. 5% to the Liberals at the 2004 election. 2-Party Booth ResultLabor recorded majorities in 57 of the 93 booths in 2004 on a range from 25… Main Candidates56 year-old Sitting Labor MP Dick Adams is a former union organiser whose huge build gives away the secret that he is a fond of his food. A former state member of Parliament 1979-82 at age 30 he served as a Minister in the Lowe and Holgate governments. A fifth generation Tasmanian he contested Lyons in 1987 only to lose after having to have his appendix removed during the campaign. Having learnt to read and write as an adult Adams has since devoted considerable effort to the Adult Literacy Program and it was as President of this program that he sat and passed the HSC English exam. His former Liberal opponent and now Independent candidate is 47 year-old Ben Quin a former army officer who is currently a small business operator at Triabunna on Tasmania’s east coast. He was briefly a member of the Greens joining the party after the Labor and Liberal Parties combined to cut the size of the Tasmanian Parliament before the 1998 state election. Quin received criticism within the Liberal Party for voicing concerns over the proposed Gunns Pulp Mill and eventually resigned as Liberal candidate after Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull gave Federal approval to the mill.

Covering the southern 7933 sq km of Tasmania Franklin includes Lake Pedder Bathurst Harbour and the southern part of the world heritage area. However much of this is uninhabited wilderness the population of the electorate concentrated in the Hobart suburbs on the eastern shore of the Derwent. Quick is retiring and is no longer a member of the ALP. He was to have been replaced on the ticket by union official Kevin Harkins but he proved an unpopular candidate and stood aside for state Labor secretary Julie Collins… She first joined the Labor Party in 1988 about the time she started working for the party as an administrative assistant. She was State Secretary of the Tasmanian Labor Party at the time of her pre-selection. The Liberal Party’s Vanessa Goodwin is a 37 year-old criminologist and lawyer for the past decade working for the Department of Police and Public Safety with responsibility for implementing and managing several crime prevention projects. She has previously worked as an Associate to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania as the Public Affairs fficer for the local Australian Hotels Association branch and as a research assistant for the Tasmanian Governor. She unsuccessfully contested Franklin at the 2006 Tasmanian election. She attracted considerable attention from the media following an incident when the Prime Minister was unable to remember her name during a radio interview.

North West Tasmania Fed 2007. The north-west coast of Tasmania extending west from Port Sorell and Devonport to include Ulverstone Burnie Wynyard Stanley Smithton and Waratah as well as King Island in Bass Strait. In Liberal hands from 1975 until 1998 it was held by Labor’s Sid Sidebottom from 1998 to the 2004 election when it was gained by current Liberal incumbent Mark Baker. The Liberal victory in 2004 has been put down to the announcement of Labor’s forestry policy by Mark Latham’s a policy that was poorly received in northern Tasmania. Baker will again be opposed by Sidebottom hoping to recover Braddon with the distractions of 2004 removed. The biggest local issue has been the intrusion into the state’s health system by the Howard government when it announced a rescue package for the Mersey Hospital at LaTrobe near Devonport at the eastern end of Braddon… 1% between the 1996 and 2001 census the largest decline in the country. Past members for this seat include former Tasmanian Premier Ray Groom who held the seat 1975-84. He was succeeded by Chris Miles who held the seat until swept away by a 10% swing at the 1998 Federal election as Labor won its first clean sweep in the state since 1974. Recent state and national election results indicate an on-going decline in the Liberal vote in this electorate which is why the defeat of Labor’s Sid Sidebottom in 2004 was a surprise. 1% swing that delivered the seat to the Liberal Party has been blamed on Mark Latham’s locally unpopular forests policy.

km on the western shores of the Derwent River from Austins Ferry in the north to Taroona in the south. It includes the Hobart central business district and all the suburbs of the city nestled into the slopes of Mt Wellington and Mt Nelson. Denison used to be a litmus test seat returning a member for the winning party at all but two elections between 1943 and 1996. However Labor seems to be taking a very firm grip on the electorate helped by the fact it is the electorate where the Greens generally record their highest vote in the country. Labor’s strengthened Federal position in Tasmania since 1993 along with the 1998 election of the first majority State Labor government since 1982 suggests Tasmania has reverted to its traditional position of being a Labor state.
