The letter will intensify the feud between the Brethren and theGreens which started after the sect ran secret advertisingcampaigns against the party at previous state and federalelections. But media and political pressure on the church over the past twoyears to identify itself in electoral advertisements has paid off— the letter names 48 male and three female sect memberssaying they are “members of a Christian group commonly known as theExclusive Brethren”. Church members do not vote and in the past have producedhundreds of thousands of dollars of pro-John Howard politicaladvertising while obscuring the source of the funds. The Tasmanianletter complains about “many unfair statements” made by SenatorBrown inside parliament and in the media saying he has tried twiceto instigate a senate inquiry into the sect.

Time running out for tasmanian devils

A workshop at the University of Tasmania involving international genetics and cancer experts has been told the devil can be saved but time is running out. In parts of Tasmania up to 90 per cent of the devil population has been wiped out by a contagious cancer-like facial tumour disease. The senior scientist with the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program Hamish McCallum says research is needed to describe the devil genome and determine how to overcome the problem of low genetic diversity in the devil population. Professor McCallum the genome description is essential if the devil is to be saved.

Fatal crash in Tasmania’s north west

The accident happened at about 6:30 this morning on a section of the Bass Highway at Parramatta Creek about 500 metres east of the weigh bridge. Police say a car and a truck collided and both vehicles caught fire. They say the person who died was an occupant of the sedan. Fire units from Devonport Latrobe Sheffield and Elizabeth Town attended. Accident investigators are at the scene and police advise the section of the Bass Highway will remain closed for a few hours.
