The Prime Minister elect Kevin Rudd plans to announce his line-up later this week. The member for Denison Duncan Kerr was a Federal Labor Attorney-General in the 1990′s. And Tasmanian Senators Kerry ‘Brien and Nick Sherry have both held shadow portfolios. Florentine Valley important for logging: Forestry Tasmania
abc.net.au – Nov 26, 2007
Conservationists have set up a blockade in the valley west of Maydena after a Moratorium on logging and roading ran out on Saturday. Steve Whiteley from Forestry Tasmania says there are no plans to harvest before Christmas but the area has been identified as part of its long term strategy to maintain output. “It’s obviously important for the supply of eucalypt sawlogs and veneer logs” he said. “And it’s also important for the long term supply of special timbers. “So it’s one of the area that over the next decade will be important for special species timbers. Senator Kerry ‘Brien has been a member of the shadow ministry for six years and most recently had responsibility for Primary Industries Fisheries and Forestry. He says there’s a good opportunity for Tasmania to secure a ministerial role in the Labor Government. The Federal Labor member for Denison Duncan Kerr has spent 20 years in parliament and won his seat convincingly but won’t say if he wants a promotion.
Carefree Punter happy to lend hand
The Australian – Nov 26, 2007
While it was strange not to see Ponting barking orders in the field and ordering his troops around there was nothing unusual about the way the Test captain belted the NSW attack around the picturesque ground. Having lost Travis Birt on three Ponting (111 not out) and Michael Dighton (146no) set about crafting an unbeaten partnership of 263 to take the game away from NSW. Ponting’s century his second for Tasmania following his 102 against Western Australia in 2001-02 included 14 fours and one six while Dighton blasted 13 fours and seven sixes for his unbeaten 146. So dominant was Dighton at the death yesterday that NSW spearhead Doug Bollinger who took a career best 12-wicket haul in last week’s Pura Cup game against Tasmania was plundered for 20 runs in one cracking over. "I supported him" Ponting said of his batting partner and man-of-the match. "I said to him coming off ‘It will probably be a long time before he plays that well again’. "That was a fantastic knock… "Give credit to Punter (Ponting) and Dights (Dighton). They played beautifully and showed what a good partnership at the top of the order can do. Farmers prepare for new government
abc.net.au – Nov 26, 2007
But Tasmanian farmers are waiting to see what changes are made under a government and what help will be extended to farmers. Labor promised $140 million during the election to develop irrigation infrastructure in Tasmania. Roger Swain president of the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association says the water money is one obvious benefit the new government will offer farmers. “We’ve been promoting for quite some time the opportunities within Tasmania to gather some of that water that disappears into the sea after a big rain event… basically it needs funding to do it and we’ll certainly be looking forward towards working with the incoming government to ensure those things are delivered for Tasmania. ” In this report: Roger Swain president Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association Latest Country Hour Stories.
State pposition predicts fire tax
abc.net.au – Nov 26, 2007
The Liberals’ Police and Emergency Services spokesman Rene Hidding says the Minister David Llewellyn has ignored the needs of the fire service and will probably increase taxes to make up the shortfall. The Shadow Minister says in the past two years the Government has increased the levy local councils are required to collect by 12 per cent a year over the past two years. He believes a 12 per cent fire tax will be introduced this year. “Given the Auditor General’s report that says that there are basically no funds available in the Tasmania Fire Service no cash reserves and that they may need to borrow I fully expect that the State Government again will squib out on it’s base contribution to the Tasmania Fire Service and will simply cost shift to the taxpayers” he said.

Like most other state health departments Tasmania’s DHHS must contend with a number of siloed information storage methods – from plain paper to mainframe computer and now mobile applications – but it has a vision to arrive at one central repository of data. DHHS procurement officer Lisa Wilson told Computerworld Australia there are different e-health projects in Tasmania but the overall goal is to have a central record because “people can be easily mistaken.
