Health Minister denies responsibility over child deaths
abc.net.au – Nov 28, 2007
In those 3 cases the either the child or the family of the child was known to the child protection service. The Health Minister Lara Giddings says child support systems have come a long way since initial reports to the department 12 months ago but she won’t accept responsibilty for the three deaths. “We’re not Big Brother we cannot be overseeing every family in Tasmania that’s not our role” Ms Giddings said. The Director of Children and Family Services Mark Byrne says a myriad of cirsumstances contributed to the three deaths. “I think the issue of how well known they were to child protection is an issue” he said. Mr Byrne says the agency had decided the three children no longer needed child protection services. Tags: community-and-society child-abuse welfare government-and-politics tasSearch for news.
Sir Robert Menzies would be turning in his grave
The Australian – Nov 28, 2007
Rudd’s conservative agenda was often difficult to distinguish from Howard’s. He was declared a "heartless snake" by Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson after swinging to the right of Howard on Aboriginal reconciliation in the final days of the election. His claim to be strong on climate change rings hollow when he has promised a subsidy of $110 million to Gunns Ltd a company intending to build one of the world’s biggest pulp mills in Tasmania which will burn a half million tonnes of native forest a year in the monstrosity of its electricity generator alone. Was this Howard’s greatest victory: the creation of a Labor Party in his own image? Leading US liberal columnist E. Dionne in The Washington Post on Kevin Rudd’s lesson for American Democrats: KEVIN Rudd combines iron discipline with a puckish sense of humour political toughness with a reflective spiritual side and a youthful disposition with an old pro’s skill at divining where a majority lies. The triumph of Rudd and his Australian Labor Party holds lessons for Democrats and other centre-left parties.
Howard’s end not good for Bush
Seattle Post Intelligencer – Nov 28, 2007
What will change for Bush is that now that Howard has departed the scene he cannot expect that Australia will be an automatic ally on major issues. Rudd is promising a more “robust” relationship with Americans which presumably means that while the two nations will continue to work as partners on the world stage there may be occasions when Australia wants to go its own way.
