Tasmanians Congratulated n Landmark Decision To Phase ut Tobacco…
Medical News Today – Nov 22, 2007
Chief Executive fficer Professor Ian lver said the Tasmanian Legislative Council’s decision to phase out display of tobacco products in all retailers except specialist tobacconists by February 2011 would assist smokers trying to quit and help prevent the addiction of new smokers. Professor lver said the challenge was now with other jurisdictions to follow Tasmania’s lead and take a unified national approach to tobacco control by removing the visual temptation to continue or take up a life-threatening highly addictive habit. “New research from The Cancer Council Victoria shows that more than half of smokers who are trying to quit can be induced into a relapse by seeing tobacco products on display” Professor lver said. “New smokers are also more likely to become addicted if tobacco products are more plainly visible as retail display is an effective way of tempting someone to make a purchase. ” Professor lver said each year 7700 Australians died from cancers caused by smoking with around the same number of smoking-related deaths from other illnesses such as emphysema heart disease and stroke.

abc.net.au – Nov 22, 2007
Mr Abbott has also promised to fund two more PET scanners: one in Geelong south-west of Melbourne and one in Penrith west of Sydney if the Coalition wins on Saturday. Tasmanian Greens senator Christine Milne says it is a clear-cut case of pork-barrelling. “It is cynical politics in the extreme leading up to an election to go to marginal seats and in this case that is exactly what the Government is doing with Tony Abbott having promised one in Geelong in Penrith as well money being given to the North Shore all in Liberal marginals” she said. “What we’ve got is a situation where cancer patients who are too poor to pay around regional and rural Australia or just live in a place where there’s no access to this technology are suffering. “The Howard Government is heartless and it is wrong and it is disgraceful that they haven’t rolled out this technology for all Australian cancer patients. In Tasmania where there are no PET scanners nuclear physician Dr Robert Ware has been campaigning for the equipment since 2000 using Freedom of Information requests and the Federal Court… “What we’ve got is a situation where cancer patients who are too poor to pay around regional and rural Australia or just live in a place where there’s no access to this technology are suffering. “The Howard Government is heartless and it is wrong and it is disgraceful that they haven’t rolled out this technology for all Australian cancer patients. Dr Ware says the timing and location of the promised PET scanners raise questions. “The scanner at the Royal North Shore Hospital is certainly very well placed in terms of need” he said.
