The job – for four-month stretches at a time – involves tending Australia’s most southerly lighthouse on Maatsuyker island monitoring wildlife and reporting weather conditions. The Tasmanian parks and wildlife service warns that candidates have to be self-sufficient have first aid skills and be willing to undergo an interview with a psychologist to ensure that they can deal with loneliness and being cut off from the modern world. “Maatsuyker is not a place for everyone. It’s isolated wild and windswept and in the front line of weather systems hitting Tasmania from the Southern cean” the advert warns. “Anyone contemplating a sojourn should take a supply of books and their knitting. ” But it adds that the castaways who put themselves forward will enjoy a “unique” lifestyle on the island that is two miles long and about a mile wide and supports a variety of flora and fauna.

Greens Justice Spokesperson Nick McKim MHA released a letter from the Director of Prisons to an inmate dated earlier this year which made it clear that “The Minister does not correspond with inmates”. Mr McKim also said that Mr Kons clearly does not understand the concepts of compassion accountability and Ministerial responsibility and said that it clearly would be inappropriate for an inmate who wanted to complain to the Minister about the Director of Prisons receiving a response from the Director. “It is not surprising that there are so many problems in Tasmania’s prison system when inmates cannot even have their concerns acknowledged by the Minister let alone investigated” Mr McKim said. “Mr Kons either doesn’t want to know about the significant problems in Tasmania’s prison system doesn’t care or is just plain lazy… Greens Justice Spokesperson Nick McKim MHA released a letter from the Director of Prisons to an inmate dated earlier this year which made it clear that “The Minister does not correspond with inmates”. During a routine check-up Healesville Sanctuary staff noticed a small type of gum lesion on one of their Tasmanian devils that is part of the insurance program. They immediately put in place procedures to minimise the risk to other animals and provided a sample to veterinary pathologists who were able to confirm the nature of the lesion. Project manager for Save the Tasmanian Devil Dr Steven Smith says that the insurance program is important for the long-term survival of the devils and that the staff at Healesville Sanctuary handled the situation with professionalism. “The way in which Healesville Sanctuary and our staff at Mt Pleasant have dealt with this highlights the importance of the biosecurity measures we have in place for the insurance population” Dr Smith said. “The insurance program recognises that we are dealing with an unusual type of cancer which is why we have ensured that there are specific protocols in place for all aspects of the care of the devils which form part of this program.

More than 6000 bonnets have been made to date and they have come from Australia the United Kingdom and the Americas. ver 19000 more are needed to complete this amazing project. At the first Blessing of the Bonnets ceremony in Tasmania last March women in the congregation wore bonnets in what was a very moving and eloquent ceremony. Van Diemen’s Land which was renamed Tasmania in 1855 was taken over by the British in 1803 and was used as a penal settlement. It must have been an extraordinarily remote and harsh environment 200 years ago for women exiled from the lands of their birth. Now Una and the Crossboyne Guild of the ICA are anxious to get the message out there and are seeking support from all who are willing to help Christina Henri achieve her dream of remembering and honouring the women who were transported across the seas to ‘lands unknown’ two centuries ago. “We would love to hear from anyone who would like to join in this noble project.

She says she has detected significant voter anger on environmental issues in the eastern Sydney electorate. “n both sides of the equation both major parties are very very closely aligned on both climate change policy as well as the pulp mill” she said. “Following my visit down to Tasmania where I spent six days down there I really felt I needed to act on this issue. “I think there are many people that feel by voting for the major parties their vote is going to be wasted. So in fact there is scope for an Independent such as myself where people can register a protest vote. But she says her former relationship with Mr Newhouse has nothing to do with her decision. “I was approached to stand as an independent candidate well in advance of having ever started a relationship with Mr Newhouse” she said.

The legislation which is similar to that passed nationally and in several states would allow excess I-V-F embryos to be used to create stem cells for use in scientific research. Tasmanian MPs have a conscience vote on the issue. Anti-abortion campaigners have lobbied against the move claiming it creates human life for the purpose of experimentation and destruction. The Health Minister Lara Giddings says the embryonic research could hold the key to treating conditions like Parkinsons Disease and type one diabetes.
