Nursing work bans looming in Tasmania
West Australian – The West Australian – Oct 24, 2007
Tasmania’s Health Minister Lara Giddings said the ANF has misread the wage increase offer of 10. 5 per cent over three years which she says would provide parity with other states. She says documents released by the state government show Tasmanian nurses are currently near the middle of a league salaries table. Nurses in WA and Victoria are being offered projected wage increases of 3. 25 per cent a year over five years. A Tasmanian registered nurse level one year eight currently earns $56882 compared to $56414 in WA and $55273 in Victoria. After all three enterprise bargaining agreements are taken into account the rates would be Tasmania $58304 WA $58247 and Victoria $57534 the minister said.

Greens pposition Leader Peg Putt MHA reminded that Gunns had posted a $88 million profit for the financial year yet in its Annual Report tabled in Parliament today Forestry Tasmania showed a measly 2. 4% return on assets when a respectable return for a Government Business Enterprise (GBE) would sit at 6 to 7%. “Digging beneath the many layers of gloss applied to Forestry Tasmania’s appalling result we find that they returned absolutely no dividend whatsoever to government coffers at the same time that Gunns made a massive $88 million profit based on using Tasmania’s forest estate” Ms Putt said. “Its plain wrong that Tasmanians get no return for the gross destruction of their forests yet the gravy train of corporate welfare continues to deliver to Forestry Tasmania’s biggest customer whilst government struggles to provide vital services in Tasmania’s health system.

As reporters and cameras crowded in during the ctober 8exchange Howard ploughed on. “You wouldn’t have saved the Mersey?” he said. “Why?”"Because the plan the Tasmanian Government had for it would haveworked really well” Will responded. “It was never going to beactually closed. Less than an hour later and 55 kilometres away down a widehighway in the same electorate the marginal seat of Braddon thePM was cheered as the Mersey’s saviour by nursing staff. Paul Will is convinced the idea of having two acute-care publichospitals competing for staff and services in such a confined areadoes not make sense. “People on the mainland travel 45 minutes toget to a hospital all the time” he said.

The good news is all about consistent flavour development without grape sugar levels getting too high and over ripe – all the things that cool-climate viticulture can deliver she says. The proximity of Bass Strait as well as the Tamar River calms nature’s climatic peaks and troughs convincing the Jansz team that northern Tasmania’s ripening periods are less troublesome than in the state’s south. While Jansz has committed firmly to its northeast Tasmanian roots the other major sparkling maker on the island Hardys via its flagship Arras Bay of Fires and Tigress brands has headed down the east coast and farther south to the Hobart and Huon River districts. Celebrated Hardys sparkling winemaker Ed Carr is attracted to Tasmania’s subregional characters. "We’re finding the southern vineyards are very much finer with elegance and palate length not seen from the northeast" says Carr. Even without separating Tasmania into subregions Carr has great faith in the island’s stylistic advantages: "As soon as you cross the water the wines are much more complex. " From the person behind the the extraordinary recent show success of Adelaide Hills-grown Starvedog Lane sparkling this praise of Tasmanian fruit is utterly convincing… Celebrated Hardys sparkling winemaker Ed Carr is attracted to Tasmania’s subregional characters. For Fryar it’s about seeing and developing the distinctive personality from both the chardonnay and pinot noir varieties that make up her classic sparkling blends. The former shows honeysuckle wheat and fresh cream characters the pinot strawberries rose petals turkish delight and quince allowing Fryar room to develop and hone the house style that has become one of the nation’s most desired fizzes – the Jansz Premium Cuvee non-vintage. Most people who like Jansz drink this version which is created from several years’ base wines and blended to create a consistent "house style" after the classic French Champagne practice.

Greens pposition Leader Peg Putt MHA also wants the Premier to explain his abandonment of the Tasmania Together target to phase out old growth logging by 2010 that was adopted by Jim Bacon. “Even the potential electricity to be produced by Gunns pulp mill as a by-product is regarded as pariah energy and is ineligible for GreenPower accreditation and this will affect Tasmania’s reputation and the business case for the pulp mill” Ms Putt said. “Yet the Premier was unaware of the GreenPower thumbs down to forest furnace electricity and its clear that he has made inflated claims about the pulp mill’s alleged benefits based on his failure to do his homework. “It has also transpired that Premier Lennon has abandoned the commitment made by Jim Bacon to the Tasmania Together target to phase out logging old growth forests by 2010 yet he refused to explain himself in Parliament… “Yet the Premier was unaware of the GreenPower thumbs down to forest furnace electricity and its clear that he has made inflated claims about the pulp mill’s alleged benefits based on his failure to do his homework. “It has also transpired that Premier Lennon has abandoned the commitment made by Jim Bacon to the Tasmania Together target to phase out logging old growth forests by 2010 yet he refused to explain himself in Parliament. “Why is it that the Tasmania Together forest targets are routinely discarded by Labor when the targets for other areas are taken as a serious mission statement?”"We think Paul Lennon’s motto is ‘loggers rule K’. ” Related Links.
