Lethal Infectious Cancer Threatens Native Species
ewire.com – Oct 25, 2007
Studies show a dire prognosis for the species if steps are not immediately taken to isolate healthy populations of the animal. Since the late 1990s Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) has significantly reduced the devil population and now threatens the species with possible extinction. The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is the largest surviving carnivorous marsupial found only on the Australian island state of Tasmania. The size of a small dog the Tasmanian devil is characterized by its black and white fur loud screech and ferocious eating habits. Scientists have noted declines of up to 90 percent in some Tasmanian devil populations since the discovery of DFTD in 1996. It is likely the disfiguring facial disease is transmitted from the bite of an infected animal usually occurring during mating. This wildlife disease is unique because tumor cells can be directly transferred between unrelated animals… Since the late 1990s Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) has significantly reduced the devil population and now threatens the species with possible extinction. It appears that the lack of an immune response to these foreign tumor cells is the result of very low genetic variation in the species.

CruiseCraft in another Bass Strait crossing.
Power Boat – World – Oct 25, 2007
The appointment doubles CruiseCraft?s Tasmanian representation with Deegan Marine in Ulverstone handling the range in the island?s north and Lewis Marine (Hobart) taking care of the south. Situated only minutes from the state capital Lewis Marine is arguably Tasmania?s largest outboard dealer with principle Hughie Lewis now celebrating 25-years at the company?s helm. He says the timing is ‘just right’ to bring CruiseCraft on board. ‘We?re in the middle of a redevelopment of our dealership having just sold our premises in central Hobart’ he explained. ‘ur new location close to Hobart Airport will house 40 boats undercover in our showroom… ‘ Lewis Marine offers a range of high profile brand names including Quintrex Whittley Aquapro inflatables and Yamaha outboards. The addition of CruiseCraft gives the dealership a wide choice to offer to the high percentage of Tasmanian angling enthusiasts. According to Hughie Lewis the boating market in Tasmania ‘differs significantly’ to the rest of Australia. ‘Here 60 to 70 percent of boats sold are aluminium’ he said. ‘So although fibreglass boats do not constitute a large market share those who do lean that way are prepared to spend on quality craft. ‘CruiseCraft suits the discerning fishing boat market perfectly and we expect to do very well with the Explorer and utsider models. ‘ For further information on the CruiseCraft range visit.
