Greens Deputy Leader and Shadow Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MHA said that he was astounded that neither Labor nor Liberal supported a motion in the House of Assembly today requesting the Police Commissioner to release Tasmania Police’s policy regarding the circumstances under which costs would be sought from offenders. Mr McKim also accused Attorney-General Steve Kons of supporting discrimination against forest protestors by supporting legal action to recover costs against Weld Angel Allana Beltran despite no policy in this area existing in the public domain. “After two government Ministers contributed to today’s debate the Tasmanian community still has no idea what Tasmania Police’s policy in this area actually is. ” “It’s astounding that neither Labor nor Liberal is concerned that Tasmania Police has left itself open to accusations of politicisation by failing to release any policy in this area… ” “It’s astounding that neither Labor nor Liberal is concerned that Tasmania Police has left itself open to accusations of politicisation by failing to release any policy in this area. “The extraordinary decision of the House of Assembly not to request policy clarification from the Commissioner of Police demonstrates the way that common sense is abandoned by Labor and Liberal whenever anything even peripherally relating to forestry is discussed. “The government was completely incapable of articulating what Tasmania Police’s policy might be and the community has again been left in the dark regarding exactly who Tasmania Police will seek to recover costs from next and under exactly what circumstances. “Ms Beltran is a brave and passionate defender of Tasmania’s forests who deserves thanks and congratulations not being singled out for discriminatory treatment by Tasmania Police with political support from Tasmania’s Attorney-General. ” Both Labor and Liberal parties combined to vote down the Greens’ motion calling for the release of any Tasmania Police policy on this matter.
