Keeling is one of the state’s most successful contemporary artists and often uses his work to depict environmental and social concerns. The award comes as events marking the Tasmanian Living Artists week take place across the state. Keeling says he is honoured to receive the award. “It’s important for the arts community in Tasmania because it’s such a vibrant part of the community and along with Living Artists Week itself this is one way of celebrating that I guess” Keeling said. Now Tasmania’s wilderness and landscape photographers have joined to protest against what they see as an assault on that brand by the proposed $1. 7 billion pulp mill. The group of 26 includes the widows and publishers of Peter Dombrovskis and legas Truchanas the pioneers of wilderness photography. In a letter to parliamentarians the group warns if the mill goes ahead the postcard images the state is known for will become rare… "He said Picton Valley and parts of the Tarkine had already been lost and the Blue Tier and borders of Ben Lomond National Park could soon be added to the list. Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year 2006 Geoffrey Lea said the pulp mill would have an impact beyond the old-growth forests. His images have been used by Tourism Tasmania on billboards and in national advertising. "The view I have of Tasmania is the view you get if you drive through a rural setting and look across paddocks to the forests behind" Mr Lea said. "In the past 10 years most of those hills have been chopped up and a lot of the farmland has gone under plantations so there has been a radical transformation in the beauty of Tasmania and I am not sure we are getting a good return on that in terms of wealth.

Williamstown coach Brad Gotch later praised the efforts of veterans Licuria and Holland. "Licca was outstanding in the midfield and Brodie came through really well after being out with an achilles injury" Gotch said. There was great news for the Kangaroos with defender Josh Gibson making a sparkling return for the club’s VFL-affiliate Tasmania. Three months after he feared his season was over because of bleeding on the brain Gibson picked up 18 touches across half-back to be one of Tasmania’s best. Williamstown will play minor premiers Sandringham this weekend in a qualifying final at Port Melbourne. The Zebras hope to regain several Melbourne players to help bolster their injury-ravaged list after yesterday’s shock 19-point loss to Coburg at Trevor Barker val. Richmond players Chris Hyde Patrick Bowden and Daniel Connors and Coburg skipper Travis Ronaldson were behind the Tigers’ second-half surge which saw them turn around a 27-point half-time deficit.
