AEST –>By Peter NewlindsIt’s all around us: the regular weekend soundtrack for ABC local radio listeners the game that dominates sports news like no other saturates weekend TV screens and day in day out occupies the back and (often the front) pages of our newspapers. It’s the AFL – the biggest slickest professional sporting competition in the country. Despite Tasmania’s appetite for the game thanks only to a deal between its government and Hawthorn football club the state is on a ration of four premiership matches per year for this year and four more. Beyond that who knows?Without regular AFL football the reality is Tasmania once a football mini power is now one of the AFL’s ‘secondary markets’ sports administration-speak for a football backwater. Is it true that Tasmania can only begin to regain its status as a power in the game and that the game itself can prosper as it once did only when the state has its own AFL team?Peter Newlinds spoke to the chief executive of the AFL Andrew Demetriou on Saturday morning and his message was clear.

AEST –>By Peter NewlindsIn researching the final part of the series of programmes on the state of Tasmanian football Local Grandstand presenter Peter Newlinds was quite surprised to learn that there are TEN under 14 Australian Rules teams playing in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football league. He found it very interesting that the number was so few. Peter went on to discover there are 20 under-14 soccer teams (as well as eight girls’ teams) playing in the same area the numbers in the age groups either side are similar. With twice as many soccer teams as there are footy teams what will the football landscape look like when the under-14 players of today become adults players for senior clubs? Are Australian Football’s numbers eroding to the point of concern or is participation as strong as ever and is the main thing for children to be playing some sport somewhere? Each year the AFL conducts its own ‘census’ its own way of measuring who is playing the game where and why. The Assistant General Manager of AFL Tasmania Daniel Smedley oversees the football census in Tasmania.

This issue has arisen due to the inability of the Tasmanian racing authorities and the Tasmanian Government to resolve the longstanding issue concerning compensation coverage and indemnity for all hospital and medical and like expenses incurred by injured jockeys. The AJA its Tasmanian representatives the TJA and the Australian Workers Union have been involved in discussions with representatives of the TTRC Tote Tasmania and the State Government for twelve months. Tasmania is the only state that does not have a full and complete coverage for hospital medical and like expenses incurred by jockeys who sustain injuries whilst riding Thoroughbred horses. Furthermore in all other States jockeys are covered by State Workers Compensation Statutes.
