Tasmanian freight subsidies to stay in equalisation scheme reforms
supply chain review – Jun 22, 2007
The Government is responding to the Productivity Commission's inquiry into the Tasmanian Freight Subsidy Arrangements. Lloyd says the Tasmanian Freight Equalisation Scheme and the Tasmanian Wheat Freight Scheme will stay. The Government has also pledged more than $98 million to the continued development of the region. “It is essential that they retain a focus on supporting the additional sea freight costs of crossing the Bass Strait” Lloyd says.

Tasmanian Greens – Jun 22, 2007
Greens pposition Leader and Shadow Tourism spokesperson Peg Putt MHA also drew attention to a leaked Strategic Risk Register developed by Tourism Tasmania which identities undesirable industrial developments as the type of high profile issue likely to lead to decline in the attractiveness of Tasmania as a destination even though the Minister was unaware of the Risk Register and unwilling to state any view on the impact of the pulp mill on Tasmania’s brand image. The Greens said that the Minister’s prospective visit to Tamar Valley Tourism operators had emerged as a face-saving exercise in which no concrete information or assurances would be able to be given since the relevant research is not available and the social and economic benefits study has no legal status in the pulp mill assessment. “Clearly the Minister hopes to get away with bland reassurances based on very little research information and was not even aware of the dramatic impact of CELC’s Nueva Aldea pulp mill on Chilean wine exports whose international image and markets were affected to the extent that a deal involving 80 000 bottles of wine was rejected because of the pulp mill” Ms Putt said. “The Mannle wine company declared the pulp mill and the wine industry to be incompatible in the same valley a situation analogous to Tasmania’s Tamar valley and said that cherries mosqueta berries and the honey industry were all going to be ‘incredibly damaged’… “Clearly the Minister hopes to get away with bland reassurances based on very little research information and was not even aware of the dramatic impact of CELC’s Nueva Aldea pulp mill on Chilean wine exports whose international image and markets were affected to the extent that a deal involving 80 000 bottles of wine was rejected because of the pulp mill” Ms Putt said. “The Mannle wine company declared the pulp mill and the wine industry to be incompatible in the same valley a situation analogous to Tasmania’s Tamar valley and said that cherries mosqueta berries and the honey industry were all going to be ‘incredibly damaged’. “Why wasn’t the Tasmanian government and the Minister responsible for both Tourism and the Environment even aware of this disturbing precedent and why isn’t she going in to bat for the tourism and fine food and wine producers of the Tamar?”"The leak of a Strategic Risk Register which identifies undesirable industrial developments as a threat to Tasmania’s brand the pulp mill is obviously being in this category shows that whilst these issues are known within the Department they are quashed at Ministerial level. “bviously someone thought the world should know that the potential impact on Tasmania’s brand from the pulp mill is a serious concern and leaked the information. “Clearly the entire Lennon Labor Cabinet is captured by Gunns’ agenda and everyone else comes a poor last” Ms Putt said.
